PATTIN'
When musical instruments were rare among the plantation Negroes, they often made music for jig dancing by clapping their hands or slapping their thighs. The mouth with lips protruding often served as a substitute for the drum when intense emphasis was desired. Words sometimes were attached to these patting chants, just as words folÂlowed the mountain breakdown tunes. Two examples of Negro 'patting chants:
